In this week’s #WebsiteWednesday, we’ll introduce you to a visual artist who blends fantasy, digital culture, and blockchain into looping pixel-art animations on a .xyz of his own: Sathar.xyz.
Sathar.xyz is the personal website of visual artist Riandy Karuniawan, who works under the alias Sathar. Born in Aceh, Indonesia, Karuniawan studied architecture in Bandung, where he became connected to the city’s indie and underground music scene by illustrating album covers and merchandise. Currently, Sathar represents both an artistic identity and a fictional entity he describes as a humanoid figure marked by insect-like antennae and a third eye. In September 2025, he was featured in an interview with NFT platform Manifold.xyz, where he discussed his ongoing Obsidian Monolith series, a collection of fully on-chain pixel art animations exploring humanity’s evolving relationship with technology.1

The artist’s website functions as both a gallery and a landing page for his work. It introduces Sathar as a character that embodies human consciousness and draws on influences from manga, tokusatsu, and retro video games. Visitors can navigate through digital paintings, posters, murals, and animations, with each piece linking directly to Manifold for viewing or bidding. Among the featured collections is Obsidian Monolith, a body of looping pixel-art GIF animations minted fully on-chain, which reflects on how human intimacy with technology has reshaped communication, dreams, and identity. According to Sathar, he designed the website to provide a distinctive experience for audiences and collectors alike.
In his Manifold interview, Sathar explained how his practice has shifted from MP4 animations to AI-assisted processes, and eventually to looping pixel art GIFs minted fully on-chain. He outlined a workflow that combines CLIP Studio Paint, Adobe After Effects, and ChatGPT, beginning with sketches and ending with frame-by-frame animation. This method reflects what he describes as “compressionism,” a style aimed at working within strict digital limitations such as the 120 KB cap for fully on-chain works.
Sathar’s choice of Sathar.xyz underscores the alignment between his work and the evolving digital landscape. .XYZ is widely used among artists and innovators in blockchain, AI, and emerging creative technologies.
