2014 continues to be a landmark year for the internet, with yet another HUGE milestone that we are proud to say we are part of.
Earlier this week, the internet hit the one billion website mark. One BILLION.
What was .xyz’s role in this, you ask? We first heard about this breaking news through a major outlet, which also gave .xyz an awesome shoutout. And a spot on The Washington Post! What did it say about us, #GenXYZ? The internet now has a billion websites, and “of those, domains ending in .xyz saw the greatest growth.”
So, it’s WashPost official: .xyz is seeing the greatest growth in the expansive internet universe. If you’re like us, it’s difficult to wrap your head around that big one billion number. Think about it this way. One second is easy to image – now how about one billion seconds? One billion seconds ago, it was 1983 – and that takes us aaall the way back to a time where there was no such thing as the internet.
As the number of websites keeps rising (you can check-out the live ticker at InternetLiveStats.com), so does the number of innovative new .xyz websites.

All the buzz these days is something near and dear to our hearts – and that’s the topic of Net Neutrality. Here at .xyz, our core mission to provide the most affordable and flexible domain extension is rooted in the same principles as Net Neutrality. Hey there, #GenXYZ. We can’t believe August is almost wrapping up and Fall is right around the corner. What was the highlight of your summer? Ours was hands down launching .xyz in June, and watching it continue to expand as the world’s largest and fastest growing new domain extension. And that’s all thanks to your support, #GenXYZ!
As we’re getting a little nostalgic this time of week (it must be all the #tbt going on), we can’t think of a more appropriate time to walk down memory lane. And we’re taking it way back.
We know infographics are all the rage, so we took it a step further. Team XYZ is very excited to present our #tbt timeline infographic (timelinographic? infographline?): the Past, Present and Future of the Internet.

Great news, #GenXYZ! While we’ve been highlighting awesome .xyz websites the past few weeks, we also wanted to break the news of a huge milestone that we hit with one of our innovative registrar partners, Hover. Hover is part of the Tucows family and is famous for their no-fuss and top-notch customer support.
It started earlier this month, when Hover kicked-off a special .xyz promotion:

There was an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from Hover’s customers and after the first week of the promotion, we debuted on their Top 20 gTLDs list at #7. When the second week rolled around, we hopped over a couple to #5. And then the third week happened…and tweet! We wake up to the sweet sound of a Twitter notification that:

According to Michael from Hover, “For the first time, the #2 spot is not being taken up by the classic TLDs .ORG or .NET, with newcomer .XYZ taking over that coveted spot.”
To say that taking over the #2 position from .net and .org is “big news” is an understatement. We’re still shy of 3 months old and we’re quickly proving that we can play ball with the big players.
We had a feeling that great things were happening when a giant like Hover, believed enough in .xyz to offer their customers such an amazing promotion. And even more rewarding is seeing live websites from users who bought their .xyz domains at Hover.
We’re excited to be working with our awesome partners to grow #GenXYZ, and we can’t wait to break more news and world records with them!

Day to day, we’re blown away by the number of innovative .xyz websites that are popping up everywhere. Fresh new sites are being developed everyday – everything from personal blogs, informational sites, official band websites, to even a multiplayer chess game.

He’ll embark on his epic journey in March of 2015, kicking-off on .xyz’s home turf of sunny Los Angeles. Keep tabs on him as he trains for his mission and recruits faithful travel buddies through his website and Facebook page (even if you don’t read Japanese, you can’t deny his infectious energy).

First, we’re excited to announce that we fully support IDNs! What does that even mean? IDN is short for “International Domain Names”. As an industry-leading registry operator, .xyz has spent quite a bit of time prepping for anything that might go wrong in a namespace that’s as popular as we’ve become. So even though we’re busy promoting the next big thing, we’ve been just as proactive behind the scenes to monitor and block spam, plus other forms of abuse.
Sure, ICANN requires all registries to do some self-monitoring. Hey #GenXYZ!
Just one week into general availability, Daniel Negari and the rest of us on the XYZ team packed up our bags – along with a ton of .xyz t-shirts – to go on an epic GoDaddy road show. And what better way to go on an epic road trip than to rent an epic RV, complete with a bedroom, full bathroom, and extendable kitchen and dining area?
Before we get into the juicy details of our trip, it’s worth mentioning that folding and packing all these goodies was a much more ambitious task than anyone could have ever imagined. It took a dozen highly skilled XYZers, plus some very thoughtful friends, and roughly 23 hours to handle all of the logistics. We’re not kidding – it was all hands on deck this past Saturday from 10 am until we packed the last box into the RV at 1 am. Have a look at what a couple hundred shirts looks like:
Several cases of Red Bull later, we hit the road in the XYZmobile. In just two days, we met thousands of GoDaddy employees in their Scottsdale HQ, as well as their offices in Tempe and Gilbert, Arizona. Each individual’s enthusiasm and passion was immediately evident, and getting to experience the sales reps’ excitement with them after helping their customers register the perfect .xyz domain was priceless. A number of GoDaddy employees registered .xyz names on the spot, even upgrading their .com’s to shorter and more memorable .xyz domains.
GoDaddy and .xyz were fortunate enough to share not one, but two HUGE milestones together this week. Upon first arriving in Scottsdale, GoDaddy CEO Blake Irving stopped by with a tip that some big news was about to be released. By now, everyone has heard about the company’s IPO for $100 million. Congrats Blake and the entire GoDaddy team!
Channeling the excitement and energy from the big news, the sales team at the Gilbert office was able to help us reach our own .xyz milestone today. Just eight days after our general availability launch, .xyz became the first new domain extension to cross the 100,000 registration mark. We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the occasion than by blowing the ceremonial horn with the wonderful people at GoDaddy.
The team is now in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the last stop of the GoDaddy road show. We’ll do a full recap upon our return, but in the mean time, check out some of the great photos and footage we’ve posted on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to get all of our entertaining updates while on tour.
.xyz has seen enormous success in just our first week of being live. We have become the #1 new domain extension, and we owe it all to the support from YOU and all of our early adopters. We appreciate and give thanks to YOU, the registrant. We positioned .xyz to be the first affordable and truly generic domain extension, and with your help, we have now successfully created Generation XYZ®. Our goal – to enable entrepreneurship and innovation for the next generation of internet users – is being realized through YOUR ideas and websites.
We have seen literally hundreds of .xyz websites pop up in this first week, and we are in the process of creating a section on gen.xyz to showcase your creations! It is interesting to see registrants from every country and interest now use .xyz as a platform to innovate. Let’s look at some examples below:
