Pioneering Bitcoin developers use .xyz domains to launch projects and expand their online presence. Bitcoin project Citrea.xyz harnesses zero-knowledge technology to expand crypto capabilities. Web3 platform Omega.xyz aims to pioneer Bitcoin DeFi with cross-chain yield generation solutions. Crypto tech organization Spiral.xyz is focused on the development of Bitcoin. In this week’s #BlockchainThursday, we’ll introduce you to a platform geared towards uniting Bitcoin and Ethereum in a scalable, secure supernetwork: Hemi.xyz.
Hemi.xyz is the online home of Hemi Labs, a blockchain project that joins together Bitcoin and Ethereum in a modular, unified network. Created to address scaling, interoperability, and security challenges, Hemi is designed to function as a “supernetwork,” where Bitcoin and Ethereum are not separate ecosystems but complementary parts of an integrated blockchain framework. In September 2024, Hemi Labs secured $15 million in funding led by Binance Labs, Breyer Capital, and Big Brain Holdings to accelerate its mission of creating this unique modular protocol.1
Hemi introduces several innovative features aimed at enhancing blockchain interoperability. One notable feature is the Hemi Virtual Machine (hVM), which embeds a full Bitcoin node within an Ethereum-compatible environment. This setup allows developers to build smart contracts that work with both Bitcoin and Ethereum without modifying existing Ethereum tools, such as Foundry and Hardhat. The hVM enables applications that were previously unattainable within either network, from Bitcoin-native dApps to complex, cross-chain functionalities that leverage both blockchains’ unique capabilities.
Beyond the hVM, Hemi’s Tunnels protocol aims to provide a secure, trustless means for users to move assets across chains. Through Tunnels, users can deposit assets, such as Bitcoin, into liquidity contracts on Hemi, which then manages and releases equivalent assets within the Hemi ecosystem. This approach to cross-chain asset portability seeks to improve upon traditional bridge models, offering a system that prioritizes security without centralization. Hemi’s Proof-of-Proof (PoP) consensus is geared to further strengthen security by inheriting Bitcoin’s security mechanisms, delivering a “security-as-a-service” model for other blockchain networks.
Hemi Labs is founded by Jeff Garzik, a pioneering developer in the Bitcoin space, and Max Sanchez, a recognized leader in blockchain security. With extensive knowledge spanning Bitcoin, Ethereum, and decentralized finance, the founders bring significant technical understanding to Hemi. Their combined experience positions Hemi Labs to create a modular blockchain network that integrates and scales Bitcoin and Ethereum, leveraging the strengths of both networks in a unified framework.
Hemi Labs reinforces its professional identity by communicating through a branded email: [email protected]. This branded email address helps ensure consistent, recognizable interactions with partners, developers, and users, reflecting Hemi’s commitment to professionalism and secure, reliable blockchain solutions. Hemi Labs creates a memorable point of contact by using a .xyz domain, contributing to its cohesive online identity as it continues to develop and launch its blockchain network.
