Innovators use .xyz domains to showcase groundbreaking advancements across diverse fields. Biotech innovator AscentBio.xyz seeks to advance drug discovery with AI-driven solutions. Tech company Tuple.xyz explores the intersection of cloud technology and AI for genomics research. AI-driven platform AgentLayer.xyz aims to transform industries with autonomous agent networks. In this week’s #AIMonday, we’ll introduce you to a platform using AI and drone technology to transform orchard management: Outfield.xyz.
Outfield.xyz is the online home of Outfield Technologies, a B2B SaaS company focused on improving efficiency and sustainability in fruit farming through drone technology and artificial intelligence. Founded in Cambridge, England, the company offers orchard management and yield estimation tools for growers of high-value fruit crops such as apples, pears, and plums. Outfield seeks to support growers by providing data-driven insights aimed at optimizing their operations, increasing yields, and enhancing profitability. Outfield Technologies provides tools that are designed to help fruit growers monitor their orchards and make data-informed decisions. Their platform uses commercially available drones to conduct rapid orchard surveys, capturing high-resolution images of trees and crops. These images are processed with AI, including machine learning algorithms, to produce maps that display key parameters such as tree health, fruit loading, and distribution. By tracking these metrics throughout the season, growers can adjust their practices to optimize yields, manage resources efficiently, and reduce crop loss. The platform also generates insights for sales forecasting, aiding in supply chain management. Outfield’s technology is used by growers in the UK, Europe, South Africa, Chile, and New Zealand.
On November 14, 2024, Outfield Technologies participated in the Fruiterers’ Conference in Cambridge, joining industry leaders and innovators to discuss how emerging technologies are reshaping agriculture. As part of their presentation, Outfield explored topics such as data-driven farming and precision sprayer technology, highlighting tools that support efficiency and cost savings for growers. The conference focused on the use of data and AI to predict yields, maximize crop output, and reduce input costs in the fruit industry.1
In August 2024, Outfield Technologies partnered with Washington State University’s Smart Orchard project to extend its technology to orchards in Washington State. Led by researchers Lav Khot and Bernardita Sallato, the project uses Outfield’s platform to collect data on blossom loading, fruit counts, and fruit sizes across multiple surveys throughout the season. Tyton Aviation, a drone service provider, supports the initiative with rapid drone surveying, completing surveys at a rate of 1-2 minutes per acre. This collaboration has provided growers with maps, metrics, and insights to evaluate decisions and refine practices for the following season.2
