In this week’s #WebsiteWednesday, we’ll introduce you to a peer-to-peer collaboration protocol helping developers share and manage code in a decentralized network: Radicle.xyz.
Radicle.xyz is the online home of Radicle, a peer-to-peer protocol designed to help developers collaborate and share code without relying on centralized platforms. According to the platform’s User Guide, the protocol builds on Git, a widely used version control system, to allow repositories, issues, and patches to be replicated directly between users’ devices using cryptographic identities. Each user operates their own node in the network, which helps distribute data and maintain project autonomy. The protocol aims to give contributors complete ownership of their work and data within a distributed network of peers. In June 2025, the team introduced Radicle Desktop, a graphical application designed to make participating in the network simpler and more intuitive.
According to the User Guide and Protocol Guide, Radicle functions as a decentralized collaboration layer for developers. It uses a gossip protocol for peer discovery and Git’s replication protocol for code distribution. Each repository in Radicle has a unique identifier derived from a cryptographic document, which identifies the project and its history. Social collaboration features such as issues, patches, and comments are stored within repositories themselves. Users can also run seed nodes to keep repositories available to the network. The Seeder Guide explains that these nodes contribute to network reliability by hosting data continuously, helping maintain the protocol’s resilience.
Radicle is founded by Eleftherios Diakomichalis and Alexis Sellier, who launched the initiative through Monadic GmbH, a Berlin, Germany-based software company established in 2018 to create decentralized collaboration tools for developers. According to the Radicle History page, Monadic GmbH built the first version of the Radicle protocol before governance transitioned to the Radicle Foundation, a Swiss non-profit founded in 2020 to steward the project and support community-led development.
Radicle uses the domain Radicle.xyz as the online home for its documentation, announcements, and community resources. .XYZ is widely adopted among projects working in forward-looking areas such as open-source software, decentralized systems, and emerging technologies.
