In this week’s #AIMonday, we’ll introduce you to a platform developing a sovereign AI system governed by community consensus and decentralized infrastructure: O.xyz.
O.xyz is the online home of O, a project developing what it describes as a Decentralized AI Managed Organization (DeAIO). The initiative is structured around a vision of creating a sovereign AI system that operates independently of corporate or governmental control. It introduces a proposed AI CEO, intended to help coordinate and manage an evolving network powered by decentralized infrastructure. In January 2025, O raised $130 million to support the development of its decentralized AI governance model and infrastructure.1
According to the project, the O.xyz ecosystem includes a range of infrastructure components—such as ATLAS (terrestrial), ORBIT (orbital), and PACIFIC (maritime) nodes—intended to form a distributed compute network. These systems are described as being designed to reduce reliance on centralized data centers and increase operational resilience. At the center of O’s proposed model is an AI agent called Miss O, which the team describes as a sovereign AI intended to operate independently and oversee core functions across the ecosystem. Other components in development include O Routing Intelligence, which is aimed at optimizing network performance, and the OCEAN platform, which the project states is intended to deliver high-speed AI services. These features are part of a broader governance structure described by O.xyz as community-led, with tools like O.DAO positioned to provide oversight and enable collective input on AI decision-making.
O was founded by Ahmad Shadid, who previously founded IO.net, which the company described as a decentralized GPU cloud network that grew to include over 300,000 verified GPUs and gained attention in 2024 for its rapid expansion and adoption. Prior to that, he led the IOG Foundation, where he focused on promoting decentralized computing and research into confidential computing and decentralized AI training. At O, Ahmad currently serves as interim CEO, with the stated intent that the AI system under development will ultimately take on operational leadership of the organization.
O’s use of .xyz reflects a naming choice that aligns with neutrality and openness. .XYZ has broad appeal, making it a suitable choice for projects that aim to position themselves as global and decentralized in scope.
