In this week’s #WebsiteWednesday, we’ll introduce you to a Brooklyn, NY-based jewelry designer creating unique handmade pieces that reflect the beauty in everyday forms: MAMA.xyz.
MAMA.xyz is the online home of MAMA Jewelry, the creative venture of Abbey E. Howard, a designer specializing in fine jewelry and what she calls “clumsy elegance.” Working under the name MAMA, Abbey crafts pieces that reflect on throwaway culture by blending the permanence of traditional jewelry materials with universal, domestic, and often ironic forms. Each piece is handmade in Brooklyn, New York, in her Crown Heights studio, using recycled materials and repurposed gems whenever possible to minimize waste and bring awareness to the environmental impact of jewelry manufacturing and mining.
The MAMA Jewelry website offers a glimpse into Abbey’s unique approach, showcasing a range of pieces that highlight her creative philosophy. For example, the VTG PLAY COIN CHARM transforms aluminum coins into wearable art, offering a nostalgic nod to everyday artifacts. Each charm, numbered 1 through 6, is crafted from 1 1/4” aluminum coins set in sterling silver. Designed to hang on a chain or hoop, these single charms blend playful history with timeless craftsmanship. Meanwhile, the TEARDROP SUPER CHUNK RING makes a bold statement with its oversized design, blending playful proportions with elegant craftsmanship.
