#WebsiteWednesday Posts

This month, we’ve been honored to be part of two exciting hackathons from coast-to-coast: from Boston Hacks at Boston University, to the very far west at the University of Southern California’s HackSC. With apps, software, and websites all around us in our daily lives, it’s no wonder why so many students are striving to become the next best developer!

For this week’s #WebsiteWednesday, we’re highlighting, a free game developed by a Japanese small business that teaches elementary and middle school kids how to code. – Onamae customer (Japan)

With their mission to make learning code fun for all ages, developed an “action RPG” game to do just that. While it might look like a run-of-the-mill role-playing game, you have to get creative and “hack” the code to defeat your enemies and pass through roadblocks.

Established in 2014, Hack For Play hosts training programs for students and has already received awards for their innovative workshops. In a country where people use mobile devices a lot more than computers, it isn’t uncommon to find elementary and middle school kids who haven’t even learned how to type yet.

But through Hack For Play, they learn to swiftly navigate the keyboard, conquer their RPG stages by manipulating the code, and before you know it (and even the students themselves), they’ve become junior programmers!

The game itself is free for anyone through their website. What’s awesome is how the creators also host workshops for these pre-teen kids, and on occasion, even sessions where the kids partner up with their parents to conquer the slimes, dragons, and monsters with code.

Do you have what it takes to clear the stages of Test it out yourself and let us know how you fare – we’re all ears @XYZ.

We’ve blogged about different businesses and apps in the #GenXYZ community, so this week, we wanted to dive into the part that comes before the business: side projects!

Usually practiced outside of your day job, side projects are a great way to explore an interest, grow creatively, and fail without risks. But even with all of these benefits, so many side projects don’t end up crossing the finish line because of the lack of time or helping hands.

That’s where this week’s #WebsiteWednesday comes in. is a community that helps you find fellow sideprojecteers to collaborate with on your latest app, website, or business idea. (Australia)

Built on the Slack messaging platform, is an online community for anyone who wants to be involved in tech projects. It’s a dynamic hub to bounce around ideas, get involved in projects, seek feedback on prototypes, or even promote your final product.

Meta funfact: is itself a side project of Hyper, an Australian app development company that caters towards startups.

If you’re working on any side projects, we’d love to hear about them. Tweet at @xyz to share!

Happy #WebsiteWednesday!

This week, we’re excited to feature two of the newest #GenXYZ companies that share the ultimate goal of making lives easier with technology. Not only do they both lie at the intersection of health and technology, they both also recently rebranded with their short and memorable .xyz domain. – (Israel)

This startup from Israel used to call their main web address, but now they’ve dropped the hyphen and rebranded to Try searching “temp drop” or “tempdrop” on Google and you’ll notice that ranks first!

Featured in TechCrunch, Tempdrop is a wearable thermometer that makes fertility tracking much, much easier. Simple and convenient, this little device automatically measures and logs your body temperature and sleep cycles.

Next up is an established nonprofit organization, which has been around for more than 20 years.

Engage.xyzEnom customer (United States)

Originally on a subdomain, Engage started off with, made the move to, and most recently, to Engage.xyzAnd in addition to their web address, they’re marketing their rebranding through new email addresses ([email protected]) and by updating their social media profiles with their new domain!

So what exactly does Engage do? Engage is an American healthcare IT solutions company that helps hospitals advance their technology systems to make everything from data migration to accessing patient information more efficient. They are also one of MEDITECH’s largest hosting companies, which is a technology platform that is installed throughout healthcare organizations. To learn more about Engage and their rebranding, check out this article from The Domains.

Tempdrop and Engage are both great examples of how you can get a short and memorable domain for your business. Whether you’re a startup or an established business – located in the US or Israel – any type of business can revamp their online presence with a .xyz domain name.

Have you seen any startups or businesses make the domain name switch? Let us know @xyz!

Election season excitement is back here in the US. But did you know? Even with all the media coverage and political chatter, last national election saw the lowest voter turnout in 72 years!

Hunter Scarborough wants to solve this issue of low voter turnout with his Tinder-meets-politics app called Voter. At his previous job, he was working 12-14 hour days and didn’t have time to research quality news to make an informed vote. To help the rest of us busy Americans, he looked to technology to develop an app that would allow us to quickly (and enjoyably) make informed decisions.

Team XYZ recently had the opportunity to meet Hunter at our SoCal Domainers Meetup where he told us the backstory to Voter. It must’ve been fate that brought us together, because he was in the midst of the transition from to!

New to the #GenXYZ family, Hunter let us pick his brain about his new company.

Team XYZ: Your app, Voter, is said to be the Tinder for politics. What was your inspiration for the app?

Hunter: During the 2012 presidential race, I became frustrated by how difficult it was to find political news sources I could trust. I wasn’t going to vote based on a soundbite from an uncle or a news anchor, and the only alternative was time consuming personal research.

I thought there had to be a way to leverage technology to give me confidence in who I was voting for.

Looking at the wealth of raw political data becoming available, I developed the concept for Voter, essentially online dating, for politics :) In order to keep things fast-paced and engaging on a topic that is usually anything but, we applied a tinder-style UI, where users simply swipe cards to indicate their positions on political issues.

X: Since your product is a mobile app, why did you create a website for it?

H: We felt it was important to have a hub, where users and potential users can go to get information about Voter, where they can download it, and how it works. We are planning to expand the site into an online version of the mobile app, giving the Voter platform broader accessibility.

X: Your site was previously but you recently made the switch to How did you decide on the switch?

H: Switching to .xyz was a no-brainer, especially after Google’s decision to put Alphabet on .xyz. is more concise, flows better, and has three important implications which help convey the company’s message:

  1. We cover everything under the umbrella of voting, from x, to y, to z.
  2. We use algorithms and objective, numerical data to find voters their ideal candidate. Xyz fits well in supporting our mathematical solution to voting information.
  3. Our target demographics are millennials and younger voters, specifically generations x, y, and z, which makes the new domain all the more relevant for us.

X: How do you think your .xyz domain will resonate with your audience?

H: I think it will resonate exceptionally well, especially considering recent .xyz press such as (HBO’s Silicon Valley) and Google’s new parent company, Alphabet.

X: Anything else you’d like to share with #GenXYZ?

H: We are big fans of .xyz, and are proud to be using the domain :) Greatly enjoyed meeting Daniel and the XYZ team last month!

It’s been a hot week here at XYZ’s sunny Santa Monica office, so we’re beyond excited for the fall cool down. As summer is ending, we all know what’s on the minds of students, parents, and teachers: back to school. (Not to mention, we’re pretty stoked for college football to come back, too!)

Speaking of going back to school, this week’s #WebsiteWednesday is dedicated to unique ways students can use their .xyz domain. Whether you’re a student looking to show off your skills, a high school student applying to college, or even a group running a project, having an online presence is the key to standing out.

Ever Google a product before you buy it?

That’s exactly what employers are doing when you’re a prospective employee. You might be thinking “eeks!” but no worries – this can be a good thing! Having a website for yourself or your organization is the perfect way to express yourself beyond the standard resume or job application. Protip: Make sure your domain name is relevant to you or your project and is memorable!

We’ve seen a lot of student sites being used as resumes, so here are 2 unique examples of students rocking their .xyz domains. We also love these because they incorporate XYZ into their social media accounts for a cohesive look across all their online channels! Talk about brand savviness.

Currently a college student, Melanie uses her website as a portfolio, blog, and resume. With an interest in marketing and design, her website shows off her creative thinking, projects, and fun facts about herself. (Bonus: have you seen her adorable pet hedgehog?)

Remember, you don’t even need to be a developer to have a website. Melanie is using Squarespace to power her site, and there are loads of other web builder options like WordPress and Wix. – Enom customer (Australia)

Ubique is unique because they are an Australian high school organization that uses their website as a online platform for their student magazine. It’s been some time since the XYZ team has been in high school, but we sure didn’t have anything like this back then!

What else can you do with your domain?

Submit it to The Challenge! We’re awarding $1,000 to the best registered .COM and .XYZ domain. Submissions close 9/3/15, so hurry!

#GenXYZ, have you taken yet? If you think you can register the best domain name – either in .com or .xyz – then enter your domain into The Challenge!

Why? Because the winner for each domain gets $1,000. These “best” domains will be determined by an industry expert based on the criteria of conciseness, memorability, and identifiability. You can check-out the full details on The Challenge website.

But on this fine #WebsiteWednesday, we’re showing off some great domains that our team thinks are awesome names.

Your Name Domain

Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Whether it’s your initials, first name, last name, or a combo of both, your name domain is a great way to kickstart your online presence. Take a note from David Andrews:

Then, of course, is how to represent your business online. What’s the name of your venture? This Canadian based restaurant just opened its doors on

There are many other things you can think about when coming up with your great domain name – just make sure that you keep conciseness, memorability, and identifiability in the back of your mind and you’ll be good to go.

Get creative and have fun with it! And don’t forget to:

Last week was our 1 year anniversary, meaning this week is the 1 year mark since our epic GoDaddy road show. This time last year, we personally folded and packed thousands of .xyz shirts and drove across to Arizona in our trusty RV. Do you remember this scene?

One thing that we didn’t have back then, were the hundreds of thousands of live .xyz websites we could’ve browsed through while we were on the road. It was especially rare to find .xyz sites that had an equally amazing mobile version of their website.

Have you ever noticed how a website looks different on your laptop compared to your tablet or cell phone? Your phone isn’t just automatically shrinking the original website, but actually, savvy web developers and designers magically code it so you can experience the same site in its best form – no matter what device you’re accessing it from. This is what they call “responsive web design” in the industry.

It’s pretty awesome to compare the different versions. Check out these .xyz websites and see how the full desktop browser version compares to its mobile counterpart.

We were truly inspired when we heard Matt Marek’s story behind developing Matt won 2nd place in the “Best Designed” category of the .xyz Web Design Contest with a site that he created for his friend – who’s also a budding actress and model – Andrea Ma Gee.

AndreaMaGee.xyzGoDaddy customer (United States)
Matt shared with us that he “wanted to create a site that was as professional and unique as she was, and .xyz was a fun and unique way to make the domain stand out.”

Another drawing point to .xyz? The ring that .xyz has with her name. If you say it out loud, you won’t miss that catchy rhyme you hear with How clever is that!

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 8.39.10 AMWhat started off as a simple project for his web design class, is now an awesome site that Andrea can use to pursue her career in entertainment.

“I really hope that one day the .xyz website I designed lands Andrea a chance at a big role that will push her acting career to stardom. It would be awesome to know I played a part in helping someone achieve their dreams.”

Hats off to you, Matt! Have you ever designed a website to surprise a loved one? Share your web design inspiration stories with us through the usual social media suspects of Twitter @XYZ and Facebook. Until next time, #GenXYZ!

On this fine Wednesday, we have a special update for you, #GenXYZ! As you know, without each and every one of you building eye-catching sites, representing your unique self with a .xyz email address, or even taking advantage of .xyz as a URL shortener, the #GenXYZ community would not be as large, innovative, or diverse as what it’s become today.

To celebrate your amazing creations, we revamped the #GenXYZ page on our website to show a glimpse of what’s out there and what this growing community is all about. A little XYZ show-and-tell window, if you will :)

So hop on over to and browse through some of our favorite .xyz sites. With so many to highlight, it’s hard to believe that .xyz domains weren’t even globally available this time last year!
