Deshraj.xyz is the personal website of Deshraj Yadav, an entrepreneur and innovator in the field of AI. Based in San Francisco, Deshraj is co-founder and CTO of Embedchain. Developed in Python, Embedchain is an innovative open-source framework called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). In an article titled Do Explanations make VQA Models more Predictable to a Human?, Deshraj and his team explore the effectiveness of explanations in enhancing the transparency of deep neural networks, particularly in the context of Visual Question Answering (VQA) tasks. The study investigates whether current methods of generating human-interpretable explanations actually make the outcomes and failures of VQA models more predictable to humans. Contrary to expectations, findings reveal that these explanations do not significantly improve predictability. Instead, the research highlights the effectiveness of human-in-the-loop approaches, where the model is treated as a black box, in making VQA model behaviors more predictable to humans. This insight challenges the prevailing assumption that explicit explanations necessarily contribute to better understanding of AI processes.
