Talk about an exciting week!

Following .Security and .Protection is now the final act. To round out this week’s whirlwind of new domain announcements, we’re ready to bring to stage the last member of the XYZ family.

Think you figured it out, #GenXYZ? Coming soon to a retailer near you, is .Theatre!

The theatre and performing arts have been a beloved tradition for over 10,000 years – who doesn’t like to be entertained?! And think about all the show venues and movie theatres in your own town or big cities. Theatres are everywhere.

Why the British spelling of “theatre,” you ask?

Aside from being the traditional way of spelling out the word, a large portion of performance venues and movies theatres in the United States also spell it the British way with an -re. Hollywood Pantages Theatre, Lyceum Theatre, AMC Theatre, and even US-based schools with theatre departments will spell it out with an -re.

We challenge you to a “theatre” vs. “theater” word hunt through the US. Which is more prevalent? Our bet is on the Brits.

As the artsiest and most creative member of our domain family, .Theatre will give everyone who has a passion for theatre a special namespace of their own. Since it is the artsiest, we’re putting some extra elbow-grease into creating a fitting logo, suited for the creative type!

We’ve narrowed it down to these two directions. Which is your favorite, #GenXYZ? Be sure to make your opinion count by tweeting us your preference @xyz!

So whether you’re a fan of the performing arts, run a production or ticketing company, manage a movie theatre, or a high school student itching to become the next Broadway star, .Theatre will give you a place online to express exactly what you do.

What common word is used in business that’s synonymous with “security”? Any guesses, #GenXYZ?

It’s .Protection! And you guessed right. On top of our big .Security announcement yesterday, we’re adding on its close sibling, .Protection to the XYZ roster.

This formidable duo will now jointly offer security-related entities flexible naming options to represent their business and get found by their customers. .Protection and .Security cover the bases for security-related individuals and businesses.

Because the words are so closely related, many security companies incorporate “protection” in their names and taglines. In addition to the range of ways to use a .Security domain, .Protection opens even more doors with uses that are relevant to brand protection, or fire, crop, environment, and intrusion protection.

What are the different ways an individual or small business can advantageously use .Protection domains? You’ll see that all types of industries can utilize these domains, for different purposes, all while maintaining the authoritative presence of proactively keeping a person, place, or thing out of harms way.

Personal defense

  • MartialArts.Protection
  • TravelAbroad.Protection

Web protection

  • CyberCrime.Protection
  • OnlineIdentity.Protection

Property protection

  • TornadoDamage.Protection
  • Homeowners.Protection

Like we mentioned yesterday, we’re also exploring ways to offer SaaS (software as a service) with each .Security and .Protection domain name. We have a few ideas up our sleeves, but we want you to guess what they might be!

Tweet @xyz or fill our Facebook inbox with your guesses. Who knows, the person with the most innovative guess just might get a little surprise :)

#GenXYZ, we’re excited to announce to you first that .Security will be joining the XYZ family! Coming to you in late-2015, .Security will be the domain for security-related entities, professionals, and all companies that would like a secure and authoritative online presence.

.Security for small businesses

It’s human nature to want to protect yourself, your family, and your business. That’s why the business of security is everywhere. From private security to building security, every city is teeming with these companies. Each employee is a security professional, and every office is its own business. With .Security, each of these SMBs will have the opportunity to start or grow their online presence with an industry-specific domain name!

But .Security isn’t limited to just people. With all of the new services coming online, there is a growing need for internet security. .Security also serves as a reputable designation for the businesses that are keeping us safe on the web.

Regardless of what type of security your business offers, you can take advantage of keyword or location-based .Security domains. For example:

  • Private.Security
  • DowntownLosAngeles.Security
  • ComputerSoftware.Security
  • HomeSurveillance.Security

Innovative use cases

Just the way the other domains in the XYZ family are unrestricted, so is .Security. That means any end user has the opportunity to register a .Security and use it in an innovative way.

What creative ways would you use a .Security domain name, #GenXYZ? Off the top of our heads, we’re thinking how you can:

  • Provide and ensure your customers a secure web experience
    • OnlineShopping.Security
    • TaxReturns.Security
  • Publish informational sites on your product or company’s security efforts
    • FraudAlerts.Security
    • IdentityMonitoring.Security
  • Represent your business’s offerings with a descriptive domain
    • JiuJitsuStudio.Security
    • MusicFestivals.Security
  • Foster investor relations with your ticker symbol
    • GDDY.Security
    • NAME.Security

Now with .Security, our XYZ family is looking more and more complete. With .College as the knowledge-driven domain, .Rent for property rentals, and .xyz – our flagship product and staple for every website, everywhere – individuals and businesses have a choice when growing their online presence.

More information about .Security to come, including the possibility of offering an innovative software as a service (SaaS) with each domain. What are your thoughts on welcoming .Security to our mix? Let us know with a tweet, Facebook message, or a good ol’ email at hello [at] gen.xyz!

Last week was our 1 year anniversary, meaning this week is the 1 year mark since our epic GoDaddy road show. This time last year, we personally folded and packed thousands of .xyz shirts and drove across to Arizona in our trusty RV. Do you remember this scene?

One thing that we didn’t have back then, were the hundreds of thousands of live .xyz websites we could’ve browsed through while we were on the road. It was especially rare to find .xyz sites that had an equally amazing mobile version of their website.

Have you ever noticed how a website looks different on your laptop compared to your tablet or cell phone? Your phone isn’t just automatically shrinking the original website, but actually, savvy web developers and designers magically code it so you can experience the same site in its best form – no matter what device you’re accessing it from. This is what they call “responsive web design” in the industry.

It’s pretty awesome to compare the different versions. Check out these .xyz websites and see how the full desktop browser version compares to its mobile counterpart.

Pretty cool, huh? With so many internet users on the go, it’s important to keep in mind how your website looks for the wide range of devices we use now-a-days. Do you have any web design advice you’d like to share? Drop us a line @XYZ on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

Until next time, #GenXYZ. Ciao!

Happy birthday, #GenXYZ!

1 year ago to the dot, the new domain for every website, everywhere, became globally available. Remember this?

It seems like just yesterday that we reset the internet and crashed several servers along the way. In true .xyz record-breaking fashion, we also recently crushed through another milestone.

Did you know that CentralNic – our trusty partner who handles the technical magic of .xyz – generates reports on how many times .xyz domains are accessed each month (also known as DNS queries)?

Well, with hundreds of thousands of active .xyz sites, a lot of people are accessing .xyz domains. And just how many? So many that we broke CentralNic’s reporting, which only counted up to 32-bit integers. That means, .xyz domains were accessed more than 2.1 BILLION times in January, causing a snafu in CentralNic’s reporting!

If this sounds familiar to anyone, that’s because the same thing happened to YouTube’s counter with the Gangnam Style music video. YouTube didn’t see Gangnam Style coming, the same way that the internet wasn’t prepared for .xyz’s rapid growth.

So how did .xyz grow so fast? In a special post on our 1 year anniversary, read CEO and Founder Daniel Negari’s blog on “From 0 to 1 Million: The Ins and Outs of Building the Largest New Domain.” You won’t regret it.
