5 tips to make your website easier to use

As we celebrate .xyz’s 11th anniversary, we reflect on more than a decade of growth, collaboration, and creativity across the #GenXYZ community. From independent creators to global organizations, millions have used .xyz to share ideas, launch projects, and shape the digital world. This momentum continues thanks to the innovators, developers, and partners who have made .xyz a platform for forward-thinking work. Building on this spirit of innovation, Q3 is an opportunity to share practical guidance for enhancing the websites that showcase your work.

This year’s XYZ Quarterly theme is “Fine-tuning Your Web Presence with .XYZ.” In Q3, we explore five strategies designed to help you make your website easier to use. While tools like Google Lighthouse can help you check performance and identify opportunities to improve, this guide focuses on what to prioritize and what to ask your developers for when fine-tuning your website’s design, speed, and overall ease of use.

Tip 1: Improve website speed and performance

Tip 1: Improve website speed and performance

How quickly a website loads has a big impact on how visitors experience it. A website that loads slowly can discourage people from exploring further, while a fast, smooth-loading website creates a more welcoming first impression. Tools are available to measure load time and performance, offering a clear picture of where improvements can be made. Even small adjustments—such as compressing images, limiting heavy scripts, or optimizing hosting—can help reduce delays.

Hosting location can also make a difference. If most of your audience is in the United States, hosting on servers located in the U.S. may improve speed. For audiences in other regions, such as China, ensuring that your site is served on local or region-appropriate servers can provide a noticeably better experience. Beyond load time, overall performance matters too—navigation, animations, and images should all run smoothly without lag or disruption.

Brilliant.xyz

Brilliant.xyz, the online home of Brilliant Labs, demonstrates how a thoughtful approach to performance can improve the browsing experience. The website includes a quick-loading animation that appears while the rest of the website loads in the background. This provides visitors with a seamless transition into the content, avoiding the distraction of watching components load one by one. Combined with a clean design and efficient performance, this helps make Brilliant.xyz feel polished and smooth to explore.

Paying attention to speed and performance helps keep visitors engaged and reduces the risk of losing them to delays. Simple steps—like testing your website speed, choosing the right hosting, and streamlining performance—can make your site faster, easier to use, and more inviting to visitors.

Tip 2: Prioritize readability

Tip 2: Prioritize readability

A website’s typography, color choices, and layout have a major impact on how easily visitors can absorb information. Prioritizing readability means more than selecting attractive fonts—it’s about ensuring text is large enough to read comfortably, line spacing and column widths support scanning, and color contrast keeps content legible for all users. These elements help visitors engage with content quickly and without strain, regardless of the device they’re using.

Readable design also improves accessibility and usability by making important information easier to locate. High-contrast elements, clear hierarchy, and thoughtful spacing benefit visitors of all abilities, including those using assistive technologies. A focus on readability can create a natural flow through content, encouraging visitors to stay longer and explore more.

AlexRamirez.xyz

AlexRamirez.xyz is the personal website of Alex Ramirez, an actress, writer, and filmmaker based in New York City. The website uses a minimal layout with large serif headlines paired with a clean sans-serif body font, balancing visual appeal and legibility. Generous “white space” around sections and consistent margins create a structured, uncluttered experience that highlights her creative portfolio. Visitors can easily explore her acting reel, original short film “Real Eyes Realize,” monologue work, and theater credits, all organized into distinct sections.

Headings, links, and navigation are consistently styled to guide visitors through her performance work, writing projects, and makeup artistry without distraction. The Media page features embedded videos with ample spacing, making it easy for users to focus on the content. By pairing straightforward design choices with a clear structure, AlexRamirez.xyz makes her creative background accessible and easy to explore.

A focus on readability is a straightforward but effective way to enhance user experience. Designers can achieve this by selecting legible fonts, maintaining consistent spacing, and testing contrast and hierarchy across devices.

Tip 3: Add alt text and descriptive links

Tip 3: Add alt text and descriptive links

Adding alt text (short for “alternative text”) is one of the simplest ways to make your website easier to use. Alt text provides a written description of an image so that screen readers can describe the visual content to someone who can’t see it. Without alt text, visitors who rely on assistive technology may miss important information. Descriptive links, such as “Learn more about our services” instead of “Click here,” are another helpful detail.

Well-written alt text and clear labels can help reduce friction, provide structure, and make your content easier for everyone to engage with. It’s a simple step that adds a layer of clarity and professionalism to your digital project.

Think of these elements as the bare minimum for making a website usable by more people. We recommend researching accessibility standards and regulations for your state, province, or country to ensure compliance and inclusivity.

JurassicMagic.xyz

JurassicMagic.xyz is the online home of Jurassic Magic, a coffee shop in Los Angeles, California’s Mid-City neighborhood that blends carefully crafted drinks with a welcoming community space. The website features descriptive alt text across its imagery, with phrases such as “A man drinking a cup of coffee in the warm morning sun” and “A scenic view of lush coffee farm land with rows of coffee trees growing under a clear blue sky.” These longer descriptions go beyond simple labels by capturing the scene, helping visitors understand the context and atmosphere even if the image doesn’t load or is accessed in a non-visual way.

This attention to detail extends across the website, where descriptive image text complements information about the café’s offerings—from specialty coffees like Guatemala Fina Medina and Ethiopia Bombe Ayla to its curated collection of books. The alt text reinforces the inviting tone of the brand by painting a clear picture of the shop’s warm environment and thoughtful presentation.

Adding alt text is a simple but effective way to make a digital project easier for everyone to use. Descriptive image text can enhance storytelling online and make information clearer and more memorable for visitors. Make sure you look up accessibility standards and regulations for more attention to inclusivity.

Tip 4: Streamline navigation

Tip 4: Streamline navigation

Clear, intuitive navigation makes it easier for visitors to explore your website and quickly find the information they need. A well-organized menu structure with concise labels and logical page groupings can reduce frustration, improve engagement, and create a smoother browsing experience. Navigation design plays a key role in shaping how visitors interact with a website, guiding them toward essential content and actions.

Features like consistent menu placement, clear hierarchy, and well-placed calls-to-action give visitors confidence as they move through your content. By eliminating unnecessary steps and reducing clutter, streamlined navigation allows people to focus on the most important parts of your digital project.

Walrus.xyz

Decentralized data storage protocol Walrus.xyz, developed by Mysten Labs, demonstrates streamlined navigation through its clean and deliberate design. The website’s primary menu is limited to four top-level categories—Discover, Build, Use, and Join—giving visitors an immediate understanding of the platform’s offerings without overwhelming them with options. Each dropdown contains clearly labeled links, helping visitors locate resources such as technical documentation, blog updates, or token information with minimal clicks.

Prominent calls-to-action, including “Use WAL Tokens” and “Read Docs,” appear near the top of the homepage, guiding visitors directly to core actions like exploring token utilities or diving into developer resources. The homepage layout avoids unnecessary clutter, opting for structured sections and visual dividers to create a logical flow. This simplicity makes it easy for developers, researchers, or prospective community members to navigate Walrus’s technical ecosystem.

Streamlined navigation can make even complex projects feel easier to explore. Clear menus, concise labels, and simple pathways help visitors find what they’re looking for and encourage them to return.

Tip 5: Test and improve based on user behavior

Tip 5: Test and improve based on user behavior

A website is most effective when it’s continually evaluated and improved. By paying attention to how people use it, you can spot what’s working well and where visitors may run into problems. Simple tools can show where people click most often, how far they scroll, or when they leave a page. These insights can guide decisions about layout changes, feature placement, and messaging updates.

Regular updates and small improvements allow websites to grow alongside their audience. Treating a website as something that evolves over time makes it easier to keep content smooth, simple, and enjoyable to explore.

Dynamic.xyz

Web3 authenticator platform Dynamic.xyz aims to simplify wallet interactions and login experiences across multiple blockchains, including EVM, Solana, Starknet, and Algorand.  The website’s Dynamic Dispatch channel demonstrates a clear pattern of ongoing improvement, with frequent updates that respond to developer and user needs. Recent enhancements include SVM token gating, cross-chain swaps via LiFi, and direct wallet funding from Coinbase and Kraken—all introduced in just a few months to make onboarding and wallet management smoother.

This steady release cadence shows how closely the Dynamic team observes usage patterns and adapts the platform to reduce friction. Features like Multi Wallet, which lets users manage multiple blockchain accounts seamlessly, demonstrate the benefits of refining a digital project over time. By publishing clear product updates and continually improving its interface, Dynamic shows how testing and iteration can keep a website easy to use and up to date.

Testing and refining your digital project helps keep it simple, smooth, and easy for visitors to use. Small changes can add up to meaningful improvements over time.

Building a smoother, easier-to-use web presence

Making a website easier to use is an ongoing process that benefits every visitor. You can improve the experience by focusing on speed, readability, clear image descriptions, simple navigation, and regular updates based on feedback.

You don’t have to master every tool to get started. Tools like Google Lighthouse can highlight opportunities for improvement, but even without technical expertise, knowing what to ask your developers for is a strong first step. Use these tips and examples from the .xyz community to guide your next round of improvements and create a website that feels welcoming and simple to explore.
