Happy New Year #GenXYZ! We hope you’re as excited for 2018 as we are. But in all the anticipation surrounding the start of a new calendar year, it’s important to take time to reflect on everything that was accomplished in the previous one. For all of us here at XYZ, that list of accomplishments is something we couldn’t be prouder of. But we didn’t do it alone, so we want to look back at all the awesome things Generation XYZ helped make happen in 2017.

Major new XYZ initiatives launched in 2017

2017 was a big year for growth here at XYZ. We acquired our 10th domain extension, .Storage, and re-launched it as an unrestricted namespace, which caught the attention of storage businesses and even coverage by industry resources like Sparefoot. Earlier in 2017, after teasing a big announcement for months through our AYDACFU campaign, we launched a new class of 1.111 billion .xyz domains, dubbed the 1.111B® Class. It encompasses all 6 through 9-digit numeric .xyz domains that have been reclassified for alternative uses, and we’ve already seen some very unique examples of active 1.111B® Class sites.

Speaking of alternative uses for .xyz domains, one of our favorite highlights in 2017 was the announcement of the exclusive partnership between Ethereum and XYZ, which allows users to pair their .xyz domains to their Ethereum wallets, making crypto trading and management a simple process through any registrar that offers .xyz. This partnership opens up Ethereum to a whole new audience and gives .xyz adopters an unprecedented new freedom in how to use their domain. Check out a video of Ethereum announcing the partnership at their DevCon3 event below.

Partnerships and events that helped make 2017 great

If you’ve been a regular reader of our monthly event recap blog series, you already know that we’ve visited dozens of countries and countless cities around the globe to spread the word about .xyz this year. We brought the #XYZsquad to San Diego for Comic-Con, then to Downtown Los Angeles for the world’s biggest gaming convention, E3, and they even danced their way onto Austin’s local news at SXSW. And that was just the beginning – they also made pit stops in China, Vietnam, and Bangladesh, among other places.

In addition to making .xyz’s presence known to the public at major events like these, we are also proud to be able to connect directly with the members of #GenXYZ with the help of our strategic partners. Product Forge regularly provides .xyz domains to the innovators who participate in their hackathons, CoderDojo teaches middle school and high school students how to code with their own .xyz domains, and Junior Achievement implemented a new website requirement to their 13-week entrepreneurship classes, which gives high school students .xyz domains – and all the other necessary tools and resources – to build their company’s first website.

.XYZ end users make a big splash in 2017

All of us at Team XYZ clearly have a lot to look back on and be proud of from 2017, but none of it would be possible without the support and passion of all of you in the #GenXYZ community. Your passion is what motivated us to eventually claim two Tech in Motion TIMMY Awards this year, one for Best Tech Workplace for Diversity and another for our CEO Daniel Negari for Best Tech Manager. So below we’re sharing just a few of the many big successes from our end users in 2017:

MIT’s Engine.xyz raises $200 million in funding for new startups

Starship.xyz featured on BuzzFeed News

Waive.Car receives funding on Shark Tank

Dodge creates concierge tracking service on Performance.Cars

We’re proud of everything that the #GenXYZ community and our team accomplished this past year, and we know that 2018 is only going to be better. We have some very exciting new initiatives rolling out this year, so be sure to stay up to date on all things XYZ by subscribing to our newsletter, reading our blog, and follow us @XYZ on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

As 2017 winds to a close, Team XYZ was happy to focus on continuing to foster the #GenXYZ community in November. Keep reading to get all the details, or check out the highlights below!

Shanghai Marathon

The #GenXYZ community in China always shows a unique passion when representing .xyz, and they were back it again this month at the 2017 Shanghai Marathon. The runners supporting .xyz in the race ran the entire 26.2 miles (or 42.2km) with .xyz flags streaming behind them, and they couldn’t have been more excited to rep .xyz!

XYZ pop up at Lime Cafe

After trotting around the globe in October, it was great to spend some time this month right here in our own neighborhood of Santa Monica. We started off the month by heading across the street to Lime Cafe, a favorite lunch spot around our office, and holding a pop up XYZ shop to hand out great .xyz swag and get the dozens of lunch-goers set up with their own .xyz domains. Lime even made a special menu item for us, and the “XYZ Special Burger” was the most popular menu item of the day! Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter to follow where we’ll be next.

Product Forge Medical Visualization Hackathon

The innovation of #GenXYZ was on display again this month as our partner Product Forge hosted their Medical Visualization hackathon in Edinburgh, Scotland. They built their projects and can now bring those ideas to help the global healthcare industry thanks to their .xyz domains.

Waive.Car swims with the sharks

The entrepreneurial spirit of our end users isn’t limited to just .xyz adopters. .Cars/.Car/.Auto adopters Waive.Car brought their new ride-sharing startup to ABC’s hit show Shark Tank, and went toe to toe with the sharks to secure an investment in their business. They even gave XYZ a shoutout, as we’re one of their first advertisers. Congrats Waive.Car, we can’t wait to see what waits for you on the road ahead!

Santa Monica College Homecoming

Over the past few months we’ve been getting ready to welcome another new neighbor near our office, Santa Monica College. They recently finished construction on a brand new campus just down the street, so we made sure to swing by for SMC’s homecoming football game to show our support and spread the word about .xyz to the students. We’ve only just begun collaborating with SMC, so be sure to check our Instagram to see what else we have in store!

Thanksgiving at XYZ

We’ve had plenty to be thankful for this year, and we were glad to have a chance to reflect on it as a team while celebrating Thanksgiving at the office. From the official launches of .Storage and the 1.111B® Class, to announcing a partnership that allows users to pair and trade Ethereum exclusively with .xyz domains, 2017 was a great year for us and for .xyz adopters around the world. We’re not done yet though, as we have plenty in store for December and beyond, so stay tuned to our blog for all the latest .xyz news.

October was another action packed month for all of us here at XYZ. Keep reading to see everywhere we went, or check out the video below for all the highlights!

There were many insightful keynotes and presentations given at the event, so if you missed any be sure to watch the replays here.

Product Forge and XYZ partner to bring innovation to Edinburgh’s tourism industry

Giving the next generation of business leaders around the world a place to show their skills is central in XYZ’s mission to get the next generation online, and our partner Product Forge has helped us accomplish this goal time and again with their hackathons. This month, Product Forge organized the Edinburgh Tourism Challenge Weekend to give Scotland’s bright young minds a crack at improving Edinburgh’s tourism industry. Hackathon attendees put forth dozens of new ways to optimize the city’s tourism industry, and we supported them with free .xyz domains so they can share their ideas with the world (and they received some great free swag to boot). Check out the hackathon recap video below to see all the action, and subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date on all the ways we support #GenXYZ!

XYZ knows that the internet of tomorrow is being built by the minds of children today. That’s why we’re excited to announce our partnership with Junior Achievement (JA) to invest in the future of young entrepreneurs in a meaningful, hands-on way.

Every year, approximately 10,000 high school students from 65 regions across the United States participate in the JA Company Program®, where juniors and seniors (and a few lucky sophomores!) learn how to run their own company by developing a business plan, operating within an organizational structure, and even liquidating at the end of the program.

This year, JA and XYZ are taking this 13-week intensive entrepreneurship program even further by implementing a company website development component for three regions: Southern California, Austin, and Ft. Lauderdale. With over 50 businesses launching in these areas, each one will receive a free .xyz domain, Weebly website builder, and WHOIS privacy protection.

“Junior Achievement is excited to partner with XYZ to enhance the authentic startup experience for students in the JA Company Program®. Branding, web presence, marketing, and sales are crucial to business success and now JA students have access to additional resources that have the potential to increase current business performance and inform their future entrepreneurial endeavors.” – Andy Schenck, Curator – Entrepreneurship Experiences, Junior Achievement USA.

Since this is probably the first time many of these students will be building out a website, we’ve developed a microsite with tips and resources to help them get started (students: ask your teachers for the password). And to help these young business leaders make the most of their unique opportunities, Team XYZ will be visiting a handful of schools in the Southern California area to train classes on choosing the right domains for their business, how to build their websites, and other best practices.

XYZ’s partnership with the innovative JA Company Program® is just another example of our dedication to helping the next generation of entrepreneurs get online with .xyz. XYZ also has a longstanding history with partners like CoderDojo, Product Forge, General Assembly, and Hustle N’ Code. Be sure to follow us @XYZ on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of our trips to the classrooms, and subscribe to our newsletter for updates on the program’s progress!

For students in need of assistance, click on the link below for access to videos, how-tos, FAQs, and more (ask your teachers for the password). And don’t forget to message us once your website is live for a chance to get featured in our weekly #WebsiteWednesday series!

Team XYZ was at some of the country’s biggest events in June to celebrate .xyz’s 3rd Anniversary. To kick things off, we introduced the innovative 1.111B® Class as part of our new AYDACFU campaign. We spent months planning and prepping, and our registrar partners all over the world did a fantastic job helping us launch this new initiative. And to commemorate turning 3, we hosted a BBQ by our Santa Monica office to go along with some entertainment from the #XYZsquad.

Check out the video below and read on to find out where we went and what else we did to tell the world that .xyz just turned 3!

E3 2017 – Los Angeles, CA

Our huge AYDACFU marketing campaign surrounding the release of our 1.111B® Class was developed, in part, to reach a particularly tech-savvy #GenXYZ audience. So why not reach some of them at one of the largest video game conventions in the world? With close to 70,000 attendees, E3 2017 gave Team XYZ ample opportunities to connect with developers and designers to raise awareness of the 1.111B®Class. And in the end, the #XYZsquad stole the show by busting a groove at the convention. To see more of our E3 2017 coverage, check out our E3 recap post or watch the video below.

Product Forge Cancer Innovation Challenge Data Dive – Edinburgh, Scotland

Product Forge has become one of our top partners when it comes to organizing hackathons for future innovators and entrepreneurs. EyHost + XYZ networking – Mohammadpur Dhaka, Bangladesh

Throughout the month of June, we worked with our partner EyHost to encourage .xyz adoption in Bangladesh. EyHost did a great job of hosting sponsored events to connect startups and small businesses, while educating them on how .xyz is being used by other Bangladeshis, such as Sheba.xyz. In fact, the team behind Sheba.xyz even invited some people over to check out their office!

shebaeventrecapcollage

In case you missed them, be sure to read our previous #WebsiteWednesday about Sheba.xyz. Then hop over to EyHost to check out their special offer on .xyz domains!

CoderDojo + XYZ provide free web development tools to young coders

June also saw the launch of a new partnership with CoderDojo, the international organization dedicated to teaching students aged 7 to 17 how to code. Through July 24th, all members of the CoderDojo community can apply for a free .xyz domain and all the tools necessary to create some of their first projects on the web. This partnership is yet another way that we are encouraging entrepreneurs to adopt .xyz to cultivate the Generation XYZ community.

For all our younger readers, don’t forget to check out CoderDojo to learn how to code with a .xyz domain today!

NIADA 2017 – Las Vegas, NV

Of course, June wasn’t only about .xyz. We also teamed up with GoDaddy to cross the desert and attended NIADA 2017, the largest independent car dealership trade show of the year. Drawing nearly 2,000 general managers and owners from coast to coast, as well as abroad, this was the perfect place to educate dealers on the benefits of upgrading to a .Cars/.Car/.Auto domain, just like manufacturer Lucra.Cars, as well as independent dealers, like Arizona.Cars and Brilliance.Auto have done already. Two of our favorite domains registered from the conference are VirginiaBeach.Cars and Z.Cars.

To learn more about .Cars/.Car/.Auto, visit www.Go.Cars, or upgrade your domain at www.GoDaddy.Cars.

Imersiv – Downtown LA
Pancakes & Booze Art Show – Los Angeles
Twilight Concerts – Santa Monica
Jayme Stone at Annenberg – Santa Monica

We attend a variety of events every month to educate the public on what .xyz is, who uses .xyz, and to connect with existing .xyz customers – June was no exception. Team XYZ started the month by attending The Los Angeles Pancakes & Booze Art Show, Jayme Stone’s Folklife Concert at the Annenberg Community Beach House, and Mayhem’s Imersiv concert. These three venues were intimate opportunities to connect directly with the next generation of internet users and introduce them to .xyz. We then finished the month by attending two Twilight Concerts, where thousands of Angelenos come every week to mingle in Silicon Beach. If you’re not in LA, catch the live action with the XYZ Team by following us on Instagram @XYZ!

The summer is far from over and XYZ has a lot more in store. We are keeping the momentum of AYDACFU up to raise awareness for your new 1.111B® Class of domains. Be sure to keep a close eye on our Instagram (@XYZ), Facebook (/XYZ) and Twitter (@XYZ), to see what Team XYZ and the #XYZsquad have planned for the rest of the summer!

May was another fast-paced month for Team XYZ. We spent the month giving members of #GenXYZ more creative freedom than ever before with their domains, by introducing the new 1.111B® Class. But before our June 1 announcement, we got to meet face to face with businesses and individuals around the world and hear about all their dynamic ideas and projects.

Product Forge Local Transport Hackathon – Edinburgh, Scotland

We started off the month sponsoring the Product Forge Local Transport Hackathon in Edinburgh, Scotland. Hackathons are one of our favorite ways to connect with #GenXYZ and support their entrepreneurial spirit. Product Forge’s Hackathon featured creative problem solving from innovators and future leaders. 8 teams composed of tech, design, business, and transport industry professionals competed to build the best new product that would improve transport services in South East Scotland. The winning team was Side who developed TransitTalks, a platform that allows individuals in communities to correspond directly with transportation planners and share their concerns and wishes.

productforgehackathoncollage

As the winning team, Side was awarded a free .xyz domain, so they can get started building the TransitTalks platform online right away.

ICANN GDD Summit – Madrid, Spain

Our next trip was to sunny Spain for the ICANN GDD Industry Summit. The summit was a great opportunity to meet with many of our registrar partners and to share our vision for the 1.111B® Class. Many of our registrar partners loved the idea and marketing support that the XYZ Team had put together (look for them at gen.xyz). We are always grateful when we have the chance to meet face to face with the registrars that allow innovators around the world to have access to .xyz, and we look forward to seeing them at future ICANN events.

Silicon Beach Networking Mixer – Santa Monica, CA

img_5885

After the ICANN summit we returned to the States to connect with members of Santa Monica’s rapidly growing Virtual Reality (VR) startup community at the Silicon Beach VR Networking Mixer. We spoke to passionate VR entrepreneurs and got to share some success stories of .xyz adopters working in VR, like Langzou.xyz. We love promoting .xyz adopters at every event we attend and the professionals we met at the mixer were inspired by their stories and can’t wait to follow in their footsteps with their own .xyz VR sites.

Silicon Beach Young Professionals Mixer – Santa Monica, CA

ed73d4a8-7fce-402a-8e72-0c962e86a03f-1

Our last stop in May was the Silicon Beach Young Professionals Mixer, which combined hungry young tech professionals, growing startups, and even a few freelance developers for a night of networking and collaboration. After we generated buzz about .xyz inside the event, we went out onto the streets of Venice to generate buzz about the 1.111B® Class with a holographic takeover.

The takeovers are far from over, as XYZ has huge throughout June to spread the word about the “All Your Domains Are Come From Us” marketing campaign and the 1.111B® Class. Stay tuned to our Twitter (@XYZ), Facebook (/XYZ) and Instagram (@XYZ) to see what Team XYZ and the #XYZsquad have in store!

The holidays are upon us, #GenXYZ! November has been an amazing month for us, starting with the great partnership with Gandi and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (get the deets here), all the way to our first ever hackathon with Product Forge in Scotland (details coming soon).

Ever wonder what Team XYZ is doing behind the world’s most popular new domain extension? We’re excited to share with you the most recent photos and the official premiere of our office Movember videos!

In an effort to give back to our own local community, over the weekend, Team XYZ began a volunteer partnership with the St. Francis Center in downtown Los Angeles. The St. Francis Center is an amazing organization that is responsible for feeding and providing resources to the homeless and elderly, and we couldn’t be more excited to prep, cook, and serve food to our neighbors in need.

Things got busy during service but we managed to snap a few pics here and there:
